Message From Elizabeth, CEO
Summer Message 2015
Welcome to summer! After a cold winter I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine and warmer weather. We look forward to celebrating summer with our Consumers and Designated Representatives, and their Personal Assistants, at our third annual Family Fun Day. This day of fun features great food, music, games, a chance to socialize with peers, as well as opportunities to learn about local resources from community exhibitors.
There have been recent staff changes in our office. Naomi, who many knew as a Program Associate, is now the Office Operations Manager. Margaret, known to many of you as the Office Associate, has joined Program staff as a Program Associate. Please join me in congratulating both of them as they transition to their new roles.
More of our Consumers continue to transition to Managed Long-Term Care (MLTC). Many people have had a seamless transition but occasionally Consumers have encountered problems or faced questions. New York State has established an Ombudsman Program for people with Medicaid who need long-term care services called the Independent Consumer Advocacy Network (ICAN). ICAN is available to anyone in a Medicaid managed care plan who needs long-term care services, like Consumer Directed Personal Assistance (CDPA). ICAN services are free and confidential, and not related to any health insurance company. ICAN is coordinated by the Community Service Society of New York. CDChoices Consumers can learn more about ICAN by visiting the website at www.icannys.org. If you have a question and would like to get help from an ICAN organization, you can call toll free: (844) 614-8800 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
On page 1 and 3 you will read about our Consumers and Designated Representatives and their Personal Assistants who advocated in support of increased wages for CDPA workers. We always welcome advocacy throughout the year, and encourage Consumers and Designated Representatives to share their CDPA story. If you would like to share a testimonial or personal story, please call our office or send and email to email@example.com.
This newsletter also contains a First Person story from a member of our Board of Directors, Kanika, who serves as a Designated Representative for her son Clemente. The CDChoices Board of Directors is comprised of community members, self-directing Consumers and Designated Representatives. If you are interested in learning more about how you could serve CDChoices as a Board Member or as a member of a Board Committee, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Finally, we are planning the 5th Annual Constance Laymon Personal Assistant Recognition Awards, which will be held in November. This ceremony, named in memory of our founding CEO, celebrates the dedicated Personal Assistants employed by our Consumers. I hope many Consumers and Designated Representatives will nominate their outstanding employees when nomination forms are mailed in September.
